SILENT PARTY
The empirical perception of elastic time is known to all.
In silence, the dancer has a unique cognitive perception of time: this is a recurring artistic concern in the history of dance.
In silence, the performers of a choreographic piece are more sensitive to the perception of their own time. They modify their tempi according to the overall duration of the piece.
Each person’s expansions and contractions of time harmonize to preserve this duration, which tends to remain constant, as a living system that is described as being in equilibrium in scientific language.
This silence is not absolute. It is the coupling of the sounds caused by the movements and the sounds within each person. It varies from one individual to another. Therefore it is relative, variable silence, and it leaves soundprints.
Conducted within the framework of scientific protocols, the study of each performer’s variations of time within a choreographic piece performed in this silence can confirm that time is composed of continuously variable instants. Each instant stretches to another instant, like bubbles in a fine foam of instants.
If time is eternal and continuous, then does it exist? If it is sequential and measurable, what is there in between two instants? These questions disappear in the silence of this temporal foam: in silence, the dancers experience a topological structure of time.
Even if these instants are tasted by the dancers with a desire for eternity, and this remains a vital fiction, dance becomes the science of movement in the silence of the instant.
